About Us

Our Curriculum

The Cotati-Rohnert Park Co-op Nursery School offers a play-based learning environment to develop the child's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. Our small class sizes and same age class groupings foster a caring, enriching, and happy environment, where children are celebrated, supported, and accepted.

Each day different teacher-guided activities, such as art projects, music, water play, baking, and tactile discovery, are offered within a period of free-play giving children a choice of participating in a new activity or a familiar one. In our school, children can get messy, try new things, and get excited about learning. The physical classroom includes dedicated areas and educational toys to encourage pretending, building, reading, counting, creating, solving, thinking, and movement. During outdoor playtime, children can run off their energy playing together in our school boat, fort, playhouses, swings, slides, sandbox, and other equipment. Circle time helps young children learn how to listen and participate in a group and prepares them for future, more structured settings.

How We Differ

The Cotati-Rohnert Park Co-op Nursery School is a private, nonprofit organization managed and maintained by its member families. Parent participation is the hallmark of our school and is what makes this school different. Parents participate with their child-learning, playing, discovering, and growing together-in a safe, supportive environment. With guidance and support from our Director/Teacher, who is employed by CRPCNS, parents take an active role in the classroom. Parents keep the adult-to-child ratio low, help with daily classroom maintenance, and bring their own talents to the school for the enrichment of all.

Depending on the child's age, parents volunteer in the classroom once or twice a week.* Parents also volunteer a minimum of three hours a month for the upkeep and daily operations of the school, and may serve on the Board of Directors. Parent club and Adult Education, held once a month in the evening, offers parents the opportunity to come together as a group to share in management decisions and to learn positive parenting skills.

* A limited number of "partial participation" positions are available for parents unable to accompany their child in the classroom due to other work or family commitments.

Lasting Friendships

Many of our families have graduated several children from our school over the years. Not only do children make special friends with one another, they also get to know other parents who work and play alongside them in the classroom. Our member parents often develop close and lasting friendships with other parents with whom they share the responsibilities and joys of running their children's nursery school. Because families are so involved, this is a place where children feel secure, encouraged, and loved.
